As someone who has forecast weather professionally for the last few years, I can’t possibly start talking about today’s weather without taking a moment to stop and take a step back to try to comprehend the insanity that occurred throughout the southern US yesterday. My heart goes out to the families whom were affected in what could end up being Alabama’s 2nd worst tornado outbreak EVER. The death toll continues to rise on a seemingly minute by minute basis and I’m just as usual held in awe of Mother Nature’s full power. It’s days like yesterday that remind me how important weather forecasting and continued study truly is. While many lives were lost, hopefully many more were saved by advanced notice associated with National Weather Service warnings (an invaluable service).
OK enough of my soapbox – what’s in store for us today? A frontal boundary is currently over northern florida as I type this and slowly pushing towards us. I’m not expecting anything even close to what we saw throughout the south for us but as the front pushes slowly south towards central Florida moisture will build up in the area. This could allow for some thunderstorm formation near us I’d say sometime around mid day (though I’m leaning towards closer to 2-3pm). Again, nothing severe is expected but anything that does fire up will as always bring the potential for bursts of heavy rain and most importantly dangerous lighting – so just be aware of your surroundings. High temperatures will once again ROCKET into the low 90s, which even though I sound like a broken record … is considerably above average for this time of the year … but relief (in a way) is on the way.
Things get a little more interesting tomorrow which will set the stage for a GORGEOUS weekend. High pressure is going to build into the area dropping temperatures perhaps by about 10 degrees on Saturday with sunny skies. To get there once again we will have to deal with the possibility of thunderstorms throughout most of the day on Friday. I wish I could be more specific but models are all over the place on the exact timing so I’ll try to give you more information tomorrow.
Should anything dangerous really fire up I’ll try to be tweeting information live throughout the afternoon – so make sure you follow me @WDW_Weather.
Saw Cirque again last evening … there’s a scheduled dress rehearsal for cast members only Memorial Day evening (which is traditionally a dark day). The show is dark for two weeks prior – does anyone on the inside know if some bigger changes are happening to the show? I’d love to know! Take care!
