In an interview with CinemaBlend, George Lucas revealed that Disney did not use his treatment for Episode VII: “The ones that I sold to Disney, they came up to the decision that they didn’t really want to do those. So they made up their own. So it’s not the ones that I originally wrote [on screen in Star Wars: The Force Awakens]”
When Disney bought Lucasfilm, they also purchased his outlines for Episodes VII, VIII, and IX. George was working with Toy Story 3 screenwriter Michael Arndt on the project. When director J.J. Abrams was hired, Arndt was replaced with Abrams and The Empire Strikes Back writer Lawrence Kasdan.
George Lucas’s Strange Magic will be released Januray 23.
