The Lion King celebrates a milestone achieved only twice before in Broadway history with its 18th anniversary tomorrow, November 13, 2015 at the Minskoff Theatre. The flagship Broadway production recently commemorated two other historic achievements: over Halloween weekend, The Lion King passed Cats to become the 3rd longest running show in Broadway history, and tonight, November 12th, the production celebrates its 7,500th Broadway performance.
Thanks to the recent development of the digital lottery system powered by Broadway Direct, The Lion King will now offer a limited number of $30 tickets to every performance via LionKing.com/lottery. The lottery – the first ever offered by The Lion King – will launch Monday, November 16th at 10:00am for tickets to the next day’s 7pm performance. Beginning with that November 17 performance, the regular schedule for the lottery will commence: entries will be accepted once the prior day’s performance begins and continue up until 9:00am on the day of the performance, at which point the lottery for that performance will be closed. Participants will be notified within minutes of the lottery closing whether or not they have won. Winners will have 1 hour to pay for their tickets online by credit card. Seat locations are assigned based on availability and may not be transferred to other people or performances.
“For many years we have explored ways to make more affordable tickets to The Lion King available to the public. But when we’ve tried a student rush in the past, some ticket brokers purchased the tickets at the rush price and resold them for much more than their face value. This new digital lottery system offers a level of accountability that ensures that the tickets we make available for $30 are sold – at that price – directly to the guests who are attending the show,” said Andrew Flatt, Senior Vice President, Marketing and Sales, at Disney Theatrical Productions.
