As early box office estimates begin to role in, Star Wars: The Force Awakens continues to break box office records. Disney executives are supporting an expectation of a $200 million weekend, while rival studios believe the number will be more like $250 million.
In play, is the number one weekend in history which currently belongs to Jurassic World which premiered with $208.4 million.
Disney says the film is expected to make at least $100 million on Friday (which includes $57 million in Thursday night shows). This breaks the record for a $91.1 million opening day which was set by the final film in the Harry Potter saga. The studios consider Thursday night screening to be part of the Friday total.
Disney continues to stress that there are still “millions of tickets available for this weekend,” as they are concerned the film’s strong performance may scare away more casual moviegoers.
