Despite already announcing the nominees for the Critic’s Choice Awards, the Broadcast Film Critics Association has decided to add Star Wars: The Force Awakens as an 11th Best Picture nominee. Due to secrecy around the film, it was not screened for critics prior to the BFCA making their nominations. The association then polled its membership to determine whether they should add the film to its nominations. “While making an amendment to the Critics’ Choice Awards nominations is highly unusual, having an 11th Best Picture nominee is not unprecedented,” the group said today. “In 2000, Cast Away was similarly screened too late for normal consideration and the BFCA included it among 11 Best Picture nominees.”
The Critic’s Choice Awards will air on A&E, Lifetime and LMN on Sunday, January 17 at 8PM ET/ 5PM PT. The show is hosted by Big Hero 6′s T.J. Miller.
