Disney Asks FAA to Use Drones for Fireworks Shows

Marketwatch has discovered that Disney has requested a Section 333 exemption from the FAA which would allow the company to use drones for a commercial purpose. Currently, that is illegal without an exemption. Disney hopes to use up to 50 drones equipped with LED lights as part of the nighttime spectacular at the Disneyland Resort and Walt Disney World. Disney calls this technology “flixels”

In the filing, Disney highlights that the operation is safe due to the existing no-fly zone that exists over Disneyland and Walt Disney World. This would prevent flixels from making contact with any other non-Disney operated aircraft.

In the filing, Disney included examples of flixels flight path for both Disneyland and Epcot

There is no word as to when flixels may make their Disney debut if approved by the FAA.
