Deadline is reporting that Disney is early in the process of developing a live-action version of The Little Mermaid to join their growing (and successful) slate of remakes. According to the site, the studio has “heard a new take and are currently evaluating whether to proceed with the idea.”
One of the issues Disney could face bringing this particular classic to the screen is a competing film at Universal. That project has already cast star Chloe Grace Moretz, hired director Rebecca Thomas, and writer Richard Curtis. While that hasn’t stopped studios before — case in point: Warner Brothers will release a version of the Jungle Book in 2018 — but Disney would be playing second fiddle in this case. Still, given the popularity of Cinderella and the aforementioned Jungle Book, it stands to reason that Disney version could still break through. We’ll just have to wait and see.
