Mere weeks after the long-anticipated opening of Shanghai Disneyland, another city in the People’s Republic of China says it wants Disney to build there next. According to the English version of the People’s Daily Online, Chongqing — located in southwest China — is planning a bid to get a Disneyland of their own.
“We attached great significance to Disney’s project in western China. Currently, we are actively preparing for a project to participate in the bidding. We believe that Disney’s new project will undergo comparison and assessment during the competition for the site selection. It is possible that our municipality will receive the project,” the local government in Chongqing announced. However, they also made it clear that there are currently no official plans for a Disney resort to be built there. The site notes that nearby Sichuan has also apparently been interested in bringing Disney to their city.
Shanghai Disneyland opened on June 16th, 2016 to much fanfare. That resort marks the company’s first in mainland China, although a smaller park resides in Hong Kong — just a couple of hours by plane from the Shanghai resort.
