Walt Disney’s Los Angeles Home Submitted for Demolition

In Los Feliz, California sits a bungalow built in 1914 that was once owned by Walt Disney’s uncle Robert and aunt Charlotte. Notably, in 1923, it’s where Walt stayed when he headed to California to start his own studio. Now it looks like the home at 4406 Kingswell Avenue will soon be demolished.

According to Los Angeles Magazine, the owners of the house, who purchased the property a couple months ago, have filed for a permit to remove the current structure and build a new home on the lot. In November, the Survey L.A. announced that the home was eligible to be added to the National Register of Historic Places but the city planning department will still be considering the request for demolition.

From L.A. Magazine:

The Kingswell house is the epicenter of Walt’s own California adventure. If Roy had not been sent to Westwood… if Robert Disney hadn’t offered the young filmmaker a home, perhaps Walt would have gone back to the midwest and disappeared into obscurity.

The Office of Historic Resources, Councilmember David Ryu, and preservationists need to work out a solution for saving this historic home, and the clock is ticking.
