After pleading guilty to breaches of health and security on the set of Star Wars: The Force Awakens which led to the injury of star Harrison Ford, Foodles Productions (which is owned by Disney) has been fined £1.6 million. In U.S. dollars the figure comes to about $1.95 million.
As Deadline recalls, the incident occurred on June 12th, 2014 and found Ford pinned down by a hydraulic door on the Millennium Falcon set. The actor suffered a broken tibia and fibula, a dislocated ankle, and a cut hand, but, by some accounts, the accident could have taken his life. Production of the film was temporarily halted while Ford recovered.
“The British film industry has a world-renowned reputation for making exceptional films. Managing on-set risks in a sensible and proportionate way for all actors and staff – regardless of their celebrity status – is vital to protecting both on-screen and off-screen talent, as well as protecting the reputation of the industry,” a representative of the British government’s Health and Safety Executive said.
In a statement, Foodles said it regretted what they called an “unfortunate on-set accident.”
