While fans might bemoan the fact that Magic Kingdom’s Tomorrowland and Epcot’s Future World may not seem as innovative as they once were, Walt Disney World is apparently looking to bring a futuristic piece of tech to the resort next year: driverless shuttles. According to the Los Angeles Times, Disney is deep into negotiations with two companies, Local Motors and Navya, to supply them a fleet of autonomous vehicles. Sources tell the Times that Disney is hoping to launch a pilot program with the shuttles later this year and, potentially, begin transporting guests with them next year. If all works out, this would be the most high-profile deployment of driverless vehicle technology following various test by companies like Uber and Google.
Disney and both companies in question declined the Times’ request for comment.
