Variety reports that Star Wars producer Gary Kurtz has passed away at the age of 78.
Earlier today it was announced that Gary Kurtz had passed away from cancer on Sunday. Kurtz is best known for his work as producer on Star Wars, American Graffiti, and The Dark Crystal. Kurtz started his career in the mid 60s, working as an assistant director on the western film, Ride in the Whirlwind. He briefly left Hollywood to join the Marines from 1966-1969 during the Vietnam War. Kurtz produced A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back, as well as working as second unit assistant director for The Empire Strikes back. Kurtz is survived by his wife, Clare Gabriel, and three children from previous marriages.
Family’s statement: “Gary was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, friend, colleague, and mentor, whose work and talent spanned filmmaking, photography, music, and cinema history. He was a Marine, a world traveller, an outdoorsman, and a kind, compassionate human being. … Gary was a magnificent man, who will be hugely missed. His whole family thanks you for your loving thoughts.”
