For the first time since Disneyland Park reopened in May, the Matterhorn Bobsleds welcomed passengers to go careening through the icy peaks of the majestic Matterhorn mountain once again yesterday.
What’s Happening:
- Disneyland Park has reopened one its signature attractions, Matterhorn Bobsleds, allowing park guests to experience the over 60-year old attraction for the first time since the parks of the Disneyland Resort closed in March of 2020.
- Frequent park visitors will also be pleased to learn that not only is the attraction open again, but Single Rider lines are once again offered to experience the family-friendly thrill ride.
- The attraction had a crowd through most of the day (when available), usually with a 30-60 minute wait time.
- There are two separate tracks that guests can experience on the attraction, but both are similar. Back in August of 2019, one half of the attraction was closed due to some broken rockwork on the mountain, leaving only one of the tracks available until November of that same year.
- When Disneyland reopened in April of 2020 after being closed for over a year due to the Global COVID-19 Pandemic, Matterhorn Bobsleds was revealed to be closed until July 1st so they could repair the mountain attraction in stages with special effort on the track.
- Matterhorn Bobsleds is often mistaken as an opening day attraction, but it’s not. It opened alongside the Submarine Voyage and Monorail as one of the park’s first E-Ticket attractions in 1959, four years after Disneyland opened. Not only was the attraction the first roller coaster at Disneyland, it was the first roller coaster ever to be made from a tubular steel track, allowing for narrow twists and turns and other maneuvers not possible before that, making way for the high-intensity coasters we see throughout the world today.
- Though, back in 1959 much of the ride didn’t look like it does today, as it wasn’t until 1977 the ice caves and abominable snowman (affectionately named “Harold”) made their first appearance inside the mountain.
- In 2015 as part of Disneyland’s Diamond 60th Anniversary Celebration, Harold himself was updated to newer Audio-Animatronics technology, keeping the over-half-century-old attraction fresh. One of the original Harold’s can now be seen as part of the Tivan Collection across the Esplanade at Disney California Adventure’s Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: Breakout!
