We got to see a bit more of Steven Spielberg’s upcoming West Side Story in a new trailer that dropped during the live broadcast of the 73rd Emmys on CBS.
What’s Happening:
- Earlier tonight during the 73rd Emmy Awards, live on CBS, a new trailer was released for Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story, due out later this year from 20th Century Studios.
- Though another trailer was released several days ago, this one is a bit different and actually teases us with one of the signature songs, “Tonight.”
- The film is an adaptation of the 1957 musical, West Side Story explores forbidden love and the rivalry between the Jets and the Sharks, two teenage street gangs of different ethnic backgrounds.
- Steven Spielberg shared some thoughts from the set when photography wrapped in 2019.
- The film stars Ansel Elgort as Tony and Rachel Zegler as Maria.
- Zegler has since been casted in the role of Snow White for Disney’s upcoming live-action film adaptation of the animated movie.
- In addition to Zegler and Elgort, West Side Story stars:
- Ariana DeBose (Anita)
- David Alvarez (Bernardo)
- Mike Faist (Riff)
- Josh Andrés Rivera (Chino)
- Ana Isabelle (Rosalía)
- Corey Stoll (Lieutenant Schrank)
- Brian d’Arcy James (Officer Krupke)
- and Rita Moreno as Valentina, who owns the corner store in which Tony works.
- Just like the stage production and 1961 film, Spielberg’s version will also be a musical telling the story of two rival gangs in 1957 New York City.
- West Side Story was inspired by Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet and features music written by Leonard Bernstein with lyrics by Stephen Sondheim.
- Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story will be released in theaters on Friday, December 10.
