Marvel Celebrates the 50th Anniversary of “Giant-Size X-Men” #1 with a New 5-Part Story
Major events in mutant history are given new context.
Marvel is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the pivotal debut of 1975’s Giant-Size X-Men #1 with a new group of interconnected one-shots based around the X-Men’s history.
What’s Happening:
- 2025 is the 50th anniversary of Giant-Size X-Men #1 and Marvel is commemorating that milestone with a new five-part event that will touch upon other major moments in X-Men history.
- The new storyline touches upon the emergence of Krakoa in Giant-Size X-Men #1 and continues to the Days of Future Past, Age of Apocalypse, House of M and Dark Phoenix Saga eras, asking “What if those moments held deeper secrets? What if the past could be rewritten?"
- The writing team of Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing team with artist Adam Kubert “for an epic saga that takes fans on a mind-bending journey through the X-Men’s greatest events – revealing mysteries long buried and secrets that will define the future of Marvel’s mutants!"
- Each of the five one-shots also features a “Revelations" back-up story by X-Men creators past and present that uncover hidden moments that will alter the X-Men’s future.
- There will be a prelude to the event released on Free Comic Book Day 2025 with the one-shot Fantastic Four/Giant-Size X-Men #1 on May 3.
- Though the X-Men were first introduced in 1963’s X-Men #1 (that series was later retitled Uncanny X-Men) – with an original lineup consisting of Cyclops, Marvel Girl/Jean Grey, Beast, Iceman, and Angel – Giant-Size X-Men #1 is arguably just as important in the team’s history and the reason so many people are so invested in the characters and concept. That story completely revamped the then dormant team, bringing in new members like Wolverine, Colossus, Storm and Nightcrawler, and setting the stage for the X-Men to become far more popular than they ever had been before.
- Adam Kubert’s cover art, depicting Ms. Marvel/Kamala Khan alongside members of 1975’s new X-Men team, in a recreation of the iconic original Giant-Size X-Men cover, is curious, given she’s a young character only recently revealed as a mutant - raising questions about just what sort of time-related shenanigans may be occurring.
- The story kicks off on May 28 with the new Giant-Size X-Men #1 and runs through July. You can check out interior artwork below.
What They’re Saying:
- Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing: “No hype: every issue of Giant-Size is here to blow your mind and break your heart. Mutantkind is the grandest, most sprawling canvas in the Marvel canon—moreover, it’s the one the Hivemind’s been arguing and geeking out about since we were teenagers at our local comic shop. Now, alongside the absolute legend Adam Kubert and three more of the best artists in the industry, we’re posed to completely wreck and reassemble the history of the X - with our favorite hero Kamala Khan front and center. It’s an honor, a joy, and a huge responsibility. Free Comic Book Day is just a taste. What comes next will be marvelous."
