Just weeks before Pandora – the World of Avatar debuts at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, James Cameron and 20th Century Fox have announced new release dates for the four (yes, four) sequel films in the works. It will start with Avatar 2 on December 18th, 2020 with other follow-ups arriving December 17th, 2021, December 20th, 2024 and December 19th, 2025. According to a post on the official Avatar Facebook page, the four films will be going into production concurrently.
Although Avatar was a massive hit when released in 2009 — breaking all kinds of box office records — it’s been a long road for the sequels. The films have been delayed multiple times, with Cameron most recently acknowledging he would miss the previously planned 2018 release date. At the same time, while Disney now has an interest in the franchise given the big push for Pandora, it should be noted that all four dates carved out for Avatar are in December where Disney has found success releasing Star Wars films. That said, the untitled Han Solo project will get a summer release, so perhaps future saga installments will follow suit.
In the meantime, Pandora – the World of Avatar opens May 27th.
