We’re getting a closer look thanks to EW at some of the high-fashion we will be seeing in Cruella, the upcoming origin story of the villain from 101 Dalmatians that will soon be released in theaters and as part of Disney+ Premier Access on May 28th.
What’s Happening:
- Cruella De Vil, one of the most notorious Disney villains out there, was dedicated to designing and making the most fabulous fur coats she could think of in the original 101 Dalmatians, even if it meant skinning 99 dalmatian puppies.
- The live-action origin story of the villain, Cruella, is set to debut on May 28th in theaters and as part of Disney+ Premier Access, and stars Emma Stone as the titular villain. Director Craig Gillespie told EW, “We're in a fashion world. That made it much more complicated, because everybody's going to have their fashion lens on as well. [We] run the risk of it taking you out of the film if you're not buying what they're selling."
- Set in 1970s London, the tone was set and Academy Award winning costume designer Jenny Beavan (Mad Max: Fury Road) had a lot to work with, given the setting and the British Punk Scene that plays heavily into the film.
- Stone’s Cruella is set to challenge the fashion establishment of Emma Thompson’s Baroness von Hellman, and as such needs costumes that are not only beautiful, but also serve the purpose of fashion, with costumes that make the audience say “I want that.”
- While showcasing the fashion of the film, EW released images from Disney that showcase the new costumes seen in the upcoming film.
What They’re Saying:
- Costume Designer Jenny Beavan: "It's quite clear in the story how [Cruella] develops, so you've got a good arc to her life in clothes…as she becomes crueler and Cruella-er, she becomes sharper and more tailored."
