Day two of D23 Expo 2019 kicked off with the Walt Disney Studios panel, during which we learned some exciting new things about the upcoming slate of Disney, Marvel and Star Wars movies.
- Walt Disney Studios co-chairman Alan Horn took the stage to share a look at all the films of the past two years.
- Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy and director J.J. Abrams brought out the entire cast of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker to discuss the upcoming film.
- We got some details on Keri Russell’s character Zorii, who she said is an old friend of Poe’s.
- A new poster was shown to the audience, featuring Emperor Palpatine looming over Kylo and Rey as they’re fighting, as well as some footage featuring Rey wielding a double-bladed red lightsaber.
- Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige then took the stage to announce some new Marvel news.
- Feige was joined by Ryan Coogler to announce a sequel to Black Panther, which will hit theaters May 6, 2022.
- The cast of The Eternals took the stage next, and announced the addition of Kit Harington who will be playing Dane Whitman aka the Black Knight in the film.
- The cast of Black Widow sent in a video letting the audience know they wished they could be there, before introducing the footage shown at San Diego Comic-Con.
- After wrapping up the Marvel portion of the panel, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson took the stage in a Jungle Cruise boat and showed off some footage from the Jungle Cruise movie.
- His co-star Emily Blunt then joined him on stage in a classic car and showed off some footage of her own.
- The cast of Maleficent: Mistress of Evil was up next. A clip from the upcoming movie was shown to guests in attendance and some new art for the film was revealed.
- Niki Caro, director of Disney’s live-action remake of Mulan, took the stage next to share a clip from the upcoming film, featuring Mulan meeting the matchmaker.
- The next film discussed was Cruella, featuring Emma Stone as the iconic Disney villain. We even got a first look at Stone as Cruella.
- Pixar chief creative officer took the stage next to discuss the upcoming slate of Pixar films.
- The first film brought up was Soul, which will feature Joe Gardner, a middle school band teacher who wants to play jazz until he literally takes a wrong step when he falls into an open manhole and he ends up in the ‘You Seminar’ in a metaphysical trip.
- The cast of the film will include Jamie Foxx, Tina Fey, Daveed Diggs, Phylicia Rashad, and Questlove.
- Foxx and Fey will play Garnder and a character named 22 respectively.
- Music for the new film will come from Jon Batiste, along with Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross.
- Soul will come to theaters June 19, 2020.
- Next, Tom Holland and Chris Pratt took the stage to discuss Onward and guests in attendance got to see eight minutes of the film.
- Before leaving the stage, Holland addressed the audience saying “It’s been a crazy week but I love you 3000,” in reference to the recent Spider-Man news.
- A new poster and a still from the film were also shared.
- Jennifer Lee, Chief creative officer of Walt Disney Animation Studios, took the stage to announce Raya and the Last Dragon.
- In this new film inspired by classic Disney films and Hong Kong action films, Raya is on a quest to find the last dragon.
- Raya is voiced by Cassie Steele and Awkwafina will voice Sisu the dragon.
- Rounding out the panel was the highly-anticipated Frozen 2.
- Actress Evan Rachel Wood was announced to be voicing the mother of Elsa and Anna and guests in attendance were shows a clip of her singing to the young girls.
- Sterling K. Brown was also announced to voice Lieutenant Matthias in the new film.
- Another clip was shown featuring a game of charades that leads to Kristoff being down on one knee and Elsa being called by a voice she has heard before as a child.
- The complete cast of the film then took the stage to sing one of the songs from the upcoming movie.
- Finally, a new poster for the film was also revealed.
