Embracing innovation and always looking toward the future, Disney has designed and filed a patent for a rotating roller coaster vehicle.
What’s happening:
- Central Florida’s Spectrum News 13 reports that Disney has filed a patent on a rotating roller coaster vehicle.
- According to the article, the patent application is titled “Roller Coaster with Passenger Compartment Motion Powered through Stored Onboard Energy.”
- The attached diagram shows designs for a ride system that allows coaster vehicles to change position on the track allowing passengers to observe more thematic elements during their ride.
- Additionally, this system would use mounted “storage devices” attached to the vehicles to provide the power necessary to allow for rotation.
- The storage devices would be charged at stations along the coaster track.
- News 13 speculates this technology would likely apply to the new Guardians of the Galaxy coaster that’s currently under construction at Epcot, citing Walt Disney Parks and Resort chairman, Bob Chapek.
- Earlier this year, Chapek gave a presentation at the D23 Expo in Japan saying the Guardians coaster will feature a “new innovative ride system.”
- Disney has not commented on their plans for this proposed patent.
More at Epcot:
- Along with the addition of the Guardians of the Galaxy roller coaster, Disney is also busy working to bring even more excitement to Epcot.
- Mid 2019 will see the end of Epcot’s Nighttime Spectacular, IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth. Disney announced that 20 year show will close next summer with a brand new show immediately taking it’s place.
- Coming soon! Guests will be able to explore all the amazing elements of our galaxy at Epcot’s Space-themed restaurant. While an opening date has yet to be announced, we do know the restaurant will be operated by the Patina Group and will be nestled between Test Track and Mission: SPACE.
