Graduation season is upon us and a popular gift is Oh, the Places You’ll Go! by Dr. Seuss. But the latest book by Disney Press is an equally inspirational gift for all ages, Three Little Words, which is inspired by the upcoming Pixar film Finding Dory. When I hear the phrase “Three Little Words” I think “I love you,” but this picture book is actually referencing Dory’s mantra, “Just Keep Swimming.”
With beautiful pastel artwork by Grace Lee, Amy Novesky’s text inspires readers to keep moving forward through life when obstacles get in their way. Moments from both Finding Nemo and Finding Dory are referenced through the book, but the main message is that you never give up on your dreams. Along Dory’s journey, she faces crabs that want to bring her down, intersections that are tough to cross, friends that want to help her succeed, and the elated feeling when you accomplish your goals. All of these messages are inspirational to anyone, but particularly to recent graduates who are facing a new journey in life.
The beautiful thing about Three Little Words is that it works on multiple levels, just like Oh, the Places You’ll Go! The artwork and story are easy enough for kids to understand and makes for a perfect bedtime story. The print is big and words are minimal per page, which also makes this a great training tool for kids learning to read. But the inspirational message is multi-generational. It’s not only a perfect graduation present, but a perfect gift for anyone who feels lost in life and needs a holistic pick-me-up.
I can’t recommend Three Little Words highly enough. The characters from Finding Nemo have been a part of our world for thirteen years now. It’s hard not to feel attached to them on an emotional level and that’s part of what makes this book work so well. The next time you’re feeling as blue as Dory, just remember her motto: “Just keep swimming.”
