To celebrate the 80th anniversary of Walt Disney’s Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Disney’s El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood is running a limited engagement from February 2nd through 7th. I was lucky enough to go last weekend and it was a such a treat to see it on the big screen again.
The magic of Snow White’s world greets you almost instantly with a window display at the Ghirardeli Soda Fountain next door. Once inside the lobby, one of four dresses from the Saks Fifth Avenue Snow White inspired collection is on display. In the gallery downstairs, Guests can see the other three, as well as a gallery of concept art from the film.
Before entering the theater, families can have their photos taken in front of a wintery display of the Dwarf’s cottage.
As a preshow, Snow White takes the stage and dances to “Some Day My Prince Will Come,” before thanking everyone for coming to celebrate. She made a point to mention the dazzling restoration the film received before the film began.
In the Soda Fountain, Guests were also presented with some unique Snow White merchandise, all of which was for sale. They did not have a sundae themed to the film, but their regular menu always has amazing treats for Guests with a sweet tooth.
This was not my first time seeing Snow White on the big screen, but it is always a treat to experience a film I’ve seen countless times with a fresh audience. People laughed at moments that I forgot were meant to be funny. And the audience cried and cheered at the end, just like Walt experienced on opening night at Fox’s Carthay Circle.
Another reason I encourage Disney fans in the LA area to see Snow White and other classic films at the El Capitan is because of the details that are easy to miss during a home viewing. In a larger format, you are guaranteed to see details or bits of animation you never knew were there. It allows you to full disconnect from your life to give your undivided attention to this timeless classic, the fairest one of all and the one that started it all.
